Tonya’s Crockpot Sloppy Joes

One of my Chicklets, the lovely Tonya Aliff, sent to me. I tried it, I loved it. I’m putting it in a book I’m currently writing (and I may remember to update this page when I do, but you’re in on a little secret if you read it and I don’t!), and she said I could share it.

So here it is!

Enjoy!

Tonya’s Crockpot Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  • 3 Pounds Ground Beef
  • 1 Large Onion (Chopped)
  • 1 Cup Celery (Chopped)
  • 1/2 Cup Green or Red Pepper (Chopped) (Tonya uses both)
  • 1 12 oz. Bottle Prepared Chili Sauce
  • 1 6 oz. Can of Tomato Paste
  • 2-3 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Suace
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Black Peper

How to do it…

  1. Chop up your veg. When I made this, I chopped it pretty well, mostly because I know celery flavors stuff, but I don't like it so I wanted it to disappear in the sauce!
  2. In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, brown ground beef, onions, celery and pepper. Drain off the fat.
  3. Place ground beef mixture into the Crockpot and stir in chili sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and ground pepper.
  4. Cover and cook on low 4-6 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Recipe makes around 20 sandwiches. And you can freeze it!

Notes

Just a note, with all that chili sauce, this packs a punch. The next time I do it, I'm going to double up the tomato paste, throw in a bit of water, and half the chili sauce just to see if I like it. It wasn't TOO spicy, I just fiddle with recipes.

But if you're not into spicy, or can't hack it, maybe give that alteration a go!
